Diarmuid: Hello and welcome to Ask About Britain, the programme where we
answer your questions about British life and culture. I’m Diarmuid
Mitchell.

My name’s Helena and I’m from Xi’an. I have a friend who’s living in Sheffield, I
want to know if it is very convenient to travel from London to Sheffield and how
long will it take and how about travelling from London to other cities.

Feifei:

We spoke to Elliot Frisby, the PR manager for Visit Britain.

It’s very convenient, I mean the links from London to many other cities around
the country including Sheffield are very good, both by road but also by rail.
Travelling from London to Sheffield takes about two and half hours, it’s a fairly
pleasant journey – and the great thing about travelling by rail and roads as well,
to a certain extent, is that you can see some of the great countryside that we
have in this country, and there’s some lovely countryside from London up towards
the north of England.

Diarmuid:
Elliot said it’s very convenient to travel from London to many cities
around the country including Sheffield, and it takes about two and
half hours by rail to get to Sheffield.

Feifei:
By rail 的意思就是
by train, Elliot 说从伦敦到谢菲尔德的交通非常便捷，坐
火车两个半小时就到了，从伦敦到英国其它城市，不论是坐火车还是汽车也都很
方便快捷。

Diarmuid: He said the great thing about travelling by rail and roads is that you
can see some of the great countryside around England.

一个好处就是你可以欣赏到沿途英国乡村美丽的风景。

London itself has some very large rail stations, including Charing Cross, which
serves the south of England; Liverpool Street Station, King’s Cross, some big
name rail stations. I mean, one of the great things recently about London is the
move of Eurostar to St. Pancras, which means that it’s now very easy for people
from the continent to come into London and then go from London out, particularly
to the north of the country and up into Scotland on some quite fast moving trains
now, that means you can get to as far as Edinburgh in something like four hours.
So it’s quite easy to get around.

Diarmuid:

Liverpool Street Station which serves the east of England.

Elliot said since the move of Eurostar to St. Pancras, it has become
very easy for people from the continent to come into London and
then continue to go out from London to other parts of the country.
