We would guess that most people, if asked for the year of the first fatal aviation accident, would have a difficult time hazarding an answer. After all, it's hardly the kind of information most of us have at our fingertips. But perhaps passing along a few words that first appeared in print that same year might jog the memory. Here's a hint: the same year that saw the first aviation fatalities (two people died in a single incident on this date) also witnessed the births of the terms airsick (meaning "affected with motion sickness associated with flying") and parachute. Getting even more down to earth, it was also the year the downer terms spoilsport and snitch first appeared in print. Finally, the year we're looking for also welcomed in the adjectives boring; adolescent; and nuts (meaning "enthusiastic; keen;" or "insane; crazy").

Don't be tenebrific—that is, "gloomy"—if you're ready to give up. We'll tell you the answer. The first aviation fatality occurred in 1785, when two balloonistsone of whom had been the first ever passenger in a hot-air balloon a few years earliercrashed during an attempt to cross the English Channel.
