Word for the Wise January 01, 2007 Broadcast Topic: Words from the Open Dictionary Happy New Year! We’re kicking off the new year with a look at few coinages that have made their way into the Open Dictionary over the past year. The Open Dictionary is a project of offerings from visitors to the Merriam-Webster web site. It includes words people are already using and think ought to be in the dictionary (try confuzzle, a mixture of confuse and puzzle) and words readers have coined to fill a perceived void (consider the wibble, "a trembling of the lower lip just shy of actually crying"). Those entries include cakehole (slang for "mouth"); chillin’ (slang for "relaxing"); fantabulous (a mixture of fantastic and fabulous), and rotini (a kind of pasta). What’s especially interesting to us is the idea that one of the new words catching on this year. Will it be politicionaire, a "political figure," or "a person who enters politics specifically to gain financially or otherwise off the public or their counterparts"? Dentritus, a term for "the debris left in a mouth after dental work"? Or perhaps healthen, meaning "to strengthen with healthy things"? |
