Word for the Wise December 25, 2006 Broadcast Topic: Christmas

Merry, merry Christmas to all. And to all who are finally breathing a sigh of relief that the shopping-wrapping-gifting frenzy is done: put on a pot of coffee and reflect on these Christmasy sentiments we’ve unwrapped. (来源:英语学习门户网站EnglishCN.com)

"Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they’re all thirty feet tall" advised humorist Larry Wilde, while author Taylor Caldwell believed, "This is the message of Christmas: we are never alone." Following in her footsteps, journalist Eric Sevareid wrote "As long as we know in our hearts what Christmas ought to be, Christmas is." Cowgirl and American icon Dale Evans ( Rogers) put it this way: "Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas."

Looking for something seasonal whose tone is a tad more tart? We’ll artfully dodge Dickens and his Scrooge’s "bah humbug" and close with a public radio sentiment straight from Lake Wobegone’s Garrison Keillor: "A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together."
