EnglishCN.com)
1. mug
Perhaps you have a lazy colleague who tells you they have a lot of work and need you to do some. So you do the extra work as well as your work--you're really busy--but really the lazy colleague isn't too busy. They just don't want to work.
If a person is a mug it means he is very easily deceived and a little stupid. And if you were tricked in that way you would be a bit of a mug. A mug
A: What's the matter?
B: I feel like a right mug. Someone just came up to me and asked me if I could change £1 for two fifty pence pieces. They took the pound and ran off!
2.love-rat
的确,love rats are terrible, they're people who cheat on their partners, and they're quite often men.
I've met people who just can't stop cheating on their partners. They're love-rats and they're getting away with it.
对话:
A: Have you read the story on Britain's biggest love-rat in the papers this morning?
B: No, not yet. What did it say?
A: Well, apparently Britain's biggest love-rat has 12 children with 12 different women, all of whom he has cheated on at least five times.
B: That's disgraceful. He shouldn't be getting away with it.
We also hear the expression love-rat used quite often in popular newspapers.
Have you ever met someone who's a love-rat?
3. fly-by-night
This new auto dealer opened up with promises to sell cars cheaper than anybody else. But his business turned out to be fly-by-night: he collected people's deposits on new cars and then disappeared with everybody's money.
They told me I could take a four-city trip for only three hundred dollars, including hotels and meals. But after I sent my deposit of $150, I never heard from them any more and I have no way to contact them. Clearly, it was a fly-by-night organization.
